The Best of all Web Browsers

With our lives being so connected these days, most of us spend more time using our web browser than any other computer program. A great browser makes for the best Internet experience, so choosing the right one is a necessity. And right now both PC and Mac owners have a lot of choices. There are the default browsers, Safari and Internet Explorer, plus dozens of others that work on both platforms. What makes any of them better than the others?

The best browsers are simple to use, speedy, hog as few computer resources as possible and keep you safe from malware and third-party tracking. On top of that, browsers should offer a wealth of customization options, tight integration with sites and services you use often, robust tab and window management, and syncing across computers and mobile devices.

There are five browsers that have most or all of these qualities: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera. Of these, Chrome and Firefox offer the best experiences across the board and have the advantage of being available for all major operating systems and many mobile devices. After using both browsers extensively for over six months, I found Firefox to be the superior browser. Read on to find out why.

Firefox: The browser to beat

If you're familiar with Firefox from years past, you might balk at my recommendation at first. Firefox was once a top browser alternative but lost a lot of popularity and users to Chrome because it grew too slow while hogging a ton of memory. It took a while, but Mozilla's developers finally turned this problem around. It's secure, fast, easy to use and customizable, uses few computer resources and makes switching between computers and mobile devices easy.

Brower add-ons

Firefox Addons List

Firefox has the most robust and useful library of add-ons for its browser, making it the most customizable and useful browser. It has all of the most popular extensions and plugins—ad blockers, adjuncts to popular services like Evernote and Pocket, social network integration, etc.—plus some very useful add-ons that are only available for Firefox. For instance the Heartbleed checker for Firefox, Heartbleed-Ext, adds a red warning at the top of vulnerable sites.

Plus, all of the add-ons you find in the official Mozilla repository (found under Firefox >> Add-ons) are checked for compatibility and malware, unlike Google Chrome's extension library. Add-ons won't add new or malicious functionality behind your back the way some Chrome Extensions have been accused of. By default, add-ons update automatically as the browser checks for new versions and security patches, but you can disable that so you can approve all updates.

Tab and window management

Firefox Tab Groups
To create a Tab Group, you use the Tab Group short cut--"Ctrl + Shift + E"
for PCs and "Command + Shift + E" for Macs. Then drag the tab you want
to use to create a group out of the main Group Your Tabs box to create a
new group.
If you like to keep multiple sites open in multiple windows or tabs, Firefox's built-in tools for managing them are the best. The Tab Groups feature makes keeping tabs organized much easier and clears away the clutter that comes with having dozens of tabs open in one window. You can group tabs any way you like and even name the groups so you remember which websites you have stored inside. Switching between groups is as easy as switching between windows, but everything stays under one icon. In Firefox you can also "pin" a tab (right click on a tab pin it), which moves it to the left of other tabs and keeps it in place permanently, even after you restart. This is useful for websites I keep open and check often, such as Gmail and Facebook, because I can always find them and see notifications.
Security

Besides keeping your plug-ins updated, there are other ways Firefox keeps you secure. The browser is automatically updated to ensure you have the freshest protection while surfing. If you come across a malware-infected site or a fake site designed for phishing, the browser will warn you before loading. This list of bad sites is kept up to date as new fakes and infections pop up.

Private browsing

Mozilla improved on Firefox's private browsing experience. Now it works similarly to Chrome--private windows open alongside normal ones, so you don't have to close down what you're doing to go incognito. However, you can't open multiple sessions in private windows as you can with Internet Explorer. If you're signed into one Yahoo Mail account in private, you can't sign into a second account in another private window.

Syncing across devices

Firefox Sync

The ability to sync browser data is increasingly important for people who spend their day switching between devices, be they mobile phones, tablets, or computers. It's nice to be able to reopen tabs from your computer on your phone, especially if the tab has needed information. I also appreciate having all my bookmarks, passwords, and add-ons on both my work and home computer. Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari all have some syncing capability, though the first two have the best and most comprehensive implementation.

Setting up Chrome's sync is easier and faster than Firefox because all you have to do is sign in to your Google account and you're done. Firefox has a code verification system that requires using an existing synced device to authorize another, which is a minor pain.

Syncing works on Android smartphones and tablets, too, since both Chrome and Firefox have mobile versions on that platform. However, there's no Firefox for iOS. Chrome is available for iPhone and iPad, though Safari is naturally more integrated with those devices and you can't change the default browser to Chrome in iOS.

Final call

Firefox is now back to being the best browser choice, thanks to recent updates and added features. It's secure, streamlined, customizable and makes switching between computers and mobile devices easy.

ANTIVIRUS: Symantec Admits Antivirus Is Dead

For all fans of Symantec Antivirus. 25 years ago, Symantec was one of the first IT security companies to develop commercial antivirus software to protect computers from hackers. Now the company says that's no longer working. Antivirus "is dead," says Brian Dye, Symantec's senior vice president for information security. "We don't think of antivirus as a moneymaker in any way." Mr. Dye estimates antivirus now catches just 45% of cyberattacks.

Antivirus products try to keep the bad guys out of a computer. But hackers often get in anyway, using 0-day threats, social engineering and other tactics. So Brian Dye is reinventing Symantec; instead of protecting against the bad guys, he is now focusing on detection and response, following FireEye which recently paid $1 billion for Mandiant who act like hackbusters after a data breach.

Ted Schlein, who helped create Symantec's first antivirus product, describes such software as "necessary but insufficient." As a partner at venture-capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Mr. Schlein invests in new cybersecurity companies that compete with Symantec.

It is clear that new strategies need to be deployed to make sure defense-in-depth is effective. Providing effective Kevin Mitnick Security Awareness Training is the starting point, but moving toward whitelisting as a measure to block unauthorized executables is another way to stop malware from taking hold on a computer.

TIPS: ENHANCE YOUR BB BATTERY LIFE

Lets get familiar on getting rid of some headache produced by your Blackberry

To my understanding and findings, blackberry batteries is the most annoying of all smartphones and it has been mockingly given the motto "hold your charger everywhere you go".

In order to maximize blackberry batteries, people have resolved to series of battery doctor applications wherein most of the said apps only contributed to battery consumption.

So if you're finding yourself low on power sooner than you'd like to see and are looking to extend the battery life on your BlackBerry  like Bold 9900, Bold 9930 or other OS 7 device, there are plenty of settings you can tweak and battery-healthy habits you can form to get the job done. From dimming the back-light to tweaking up some network settings, a little bit goes a long way. These tips work for improving battery life on OS 6 and lower devices as well (although menus may be a bit different) so if you're looking to get the most our of your BlackBerry battery, keep reading for our top ten tricks to improve battery life on your BlackBerry Smartphone.

1. Use Wifi when available - Turn Off Wifi when not in use

BlackBerry Wifi Settings
Wifi seems to be the biggest influencer of battery life on newer devices like the Bold 9900/9930. In all of our tests and real world outings, having Wifi on and connected to a Wifi network was amazing for battery life. Using the Wifi network for data instead of the carrier network makes a HUGE difference in battery life (the radios don't have to work as hard). The Bold 9900 can get a full "work day" of use and still sit at around 80% battery life come quitting time all thanks to Wifi.
However when you know you won't be using Wifi if you're out for the day or somewhere where there is no Wifi connection, you can simply turn it off to keep it from eating away at your battery. This keeps the device from searching for networks and draining the battery.
Long story short - if you have a Wifi network available ... use it. If you don't ... turn it off.
To Disable Wifi
  • Click on the Network Settings area on your home screen
  • Uncheck Wi-Fi (to enable Wifi repeat the process but check the box)

2. Dim the Backlight

BlackBerry Backlight Settings
When you fire up a new device, more often than not the backlight brightness is set at 70%. This is all well and good to start as you can see the screen clearly and everything looks great. Your natural tendency to want to see things as bright as possible may have you cranking it up to 100%, however this can more quickly drain your battery as the extra juice needed to keep the screen fully lit up eats away at battery life. Turning the brightness down (even just a bit) can help immensely to extend your battery. Personally I always drop my screen brightness to 10% and have never had an issue. It may seem a bit dark at first for some, but trust me, once you adjust to it you'll never know the difference and your battery will thank you.
To change your backlight brightness:
  • Go to Options > Display > Screen Display
  • Scroll to Backlight Brightness and change to 10

3. Change Your Backlight Timeout

BlackBerry Backlight Settings
Having the backlight timeout set to a low value keeps your screen from staying on unnecessarily when you're done doing whatever you're doing. In most cases there is no need to have the screen stay on for 2 minutes or even 1 minute after you're done using the device. I think that sticking to 20 or even leavng it at the default 30 seconds works just fine, though if you're really in need of more precious seconds of battery life you can put it all the way down to a 10 second timeout. Having a short timeout on your backlight keeps the screen from staying on too long and eating up your battery.
To adjust the Backlight Timeout:
  • Go to Options > Display > Screen Display
  • Scroll to Backlight Timeout and change to 20 Sec.

4. Turn Off Bluetooth When Not In Use

BlackBerry Bluetooth Settings
Bluetooth is a great feature of BlackBerry smartphones. It lets you connect with devices such as headsets, computers, speakers and much more. However when not in use, having Bluetooth active can slowly take away from your overall battery life. When you're not using Bluetooth it's always a good idea to just turn it off. Granted you won't be able to automatically connect to devices without turning it on again, but it's only a few clicks away so it's never too much of a hassle to fire it up again.
To Disable Bluetooth:
  • Click on the Network Settings area on your home screen
  • Uncheck Bluetooth (to enable Bluetooth repeat the steps but check the box)
As for Bluetooth while talking on the phone, the Crack team debates this one back and forth. Arguably you should get better BlackBerry life if you're on a call using a Bluetooth headset or Bluetooth Speakerphone (since you're now saving your BlackBerry from having to use it's microphone and speakers). Over the years we've found this can vary a bit depending, so it's something you'll want to test out with whatever Bluetooth Accessories you use. But for sure when you're not using Bluetooth, turn it off.

5. Change Network Settings In Poor Coverage

BlackBerry Network Settings
This one not many people think of but it can also be a big help on the battery. If you happen to find yourself in an area with poor network coverage for your carrier, you can change up your settings or even turn off data completely and save yourself some precious battery bars. Sometimes when you find yourself in poor coverage it could be due to a clogged network (as happens often to the Crack Team at tradeshows or for those who are on AT&T in big cities like New York or San Francisco). If this is the case, you can access your Network Settings and change your device from 3G/H+ down to 2G. This drops your "3G data" and gets you on the slower 2G network, but also clears things up as your device won't constantly struggle to find a data connection. It may sound a bit odd, but in times of need it definitely does the trick. Depending on your situation, this could literally add a day, never mind hours, to your battery life.
Change your Network Settings to 2G:
  • Click on the Network Settings area on your home screen
  • Choose Networks and Connections > Mobile Network
  • Choose the dropdown box next to Network Mode and select 2G
Alternatively, you can totally disable data on your device by simply turning data services off in this same menu. Keep in mind this will kill all data to your device, so apps, emails, BBM and the like won't be received.

6. Use the Auto On/Off feature or Bedside Mode

BlackBerry Auto On/Off
This is a simple yet not well known feature of BlackBerry Smartphones. Built into the OS is the ability to automatically turn the device on and off at given times. This is extremely useful for saving battery life as well as turning the device off when you're sleeping, in daily meetings etc. In BlackBerry 7 you can set the Auto On/Off for both weekdays and weekends and if you learn to use it correctly it can help out tremendously with your battery life. Keep in mind that this will totally shut down the device so you won't receive emails, phone calls or SMS messages as it's essentially the same as powering off the device. The good news is that if you have an alarm set before your turn on time the device will power on to sound the alarm.
To use Auto On/Off
  • Select Options > Device > Auto On/Off
  • Check Enabled for Weekday, Weekend or both
  • Choose the time you'd like the device to turn on and the time to turn off (ie. 10pm to 7am)
Also lumped in with the Auto On/Off is Bedside Mode. This nifty feature is accessed through Clock > Options and lets you automatically turn off the device LED and Radio as well as dim the screen when Bedside Mode is active. This feature lets the device remain on while not taking up any extra battery life with the device radio or LED active. The clock will be displayed and the screem dimmed, so if you don't want to worry about missing phone calls or SMS messages, this is definitely a better way to go. You can also power off the display fully in Bedside mode, further saving battery life (just hit the screen lock button once in Bedside mode). Read more on using Bedside Mode here.

7. Lock Your Device and/or use a BlackBerry Case w/ sleeper magnet

BlackBerry Device Password
While locking the device is something you should do anyway (better security when you use a password) it can also help save battery life. When your device is in your pocket or purse and it gets banged around, sometimes the screen will activate when a key is pressed. To prevent this you can either use the lock button on your device or set a device password with a timeout. This is a good practice to keep the device safe while preventing the screen from turning on when you don't want it to. You can also use one of the many BlackBerry holsters that contains a sleeper magnet - automatically putting your device to sleep when you put it in the holster.

8. Exit Unused Apps

BlackBerry App Switcher
Simply closing unused apps can go a long way in helping battery life. In particular apps that constantly pull your GPS location or perfom other tasks really hinder your battery life when not in use. To easily close these apps you can use the built-in App Switcher to see what's running on your device, then close anything you aren't using.
To close unused apps:
  • Press and hold the Menu button to open the app switcher
  • Highlight and select the app you want to close
  • When in the app, press the Menu button again then exit (shutdown, logout) the app

9. Change App Refresh Settings

BlackBerry Twitter Refresh Settings
Apps like Twitter, Facebook and others that run in the background on your device can eat up precious battery life in no time. These apps constantly refresh at set intervals and slowly chip away at battery life you could be saving. For any app that has a background refresh, you'll want to turn the refresh rate up or even off completely. Twitter for example can be set to refresh at anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour. Having the app refresh every five minutes isn't the best idea if you're looking to conserve battery power, so changing it to 1 hour or even turning it off and manually refreshing as needed goes a long way. The same is the case for Facebook, Social Feeds and other apps that refresh in the background.

10. Charge Your Device (and buy a spare battery!)

BlackBerry Charging
Last but not least is the "no brainer" of the bunch. Charge your device whenever you have the chance. Be it at home or in your office with a standard wall charger or BlackBerry charging pod, in your car with a car charger or wherever you happen to be. Charging in your down time is obviously the best way to keep your battery up and running all day long.
If you happen to be on the go daily and fear your device won't make it through the day, why not just carry a spare battery? This is the best way to ensure you're up and running when you need to be and will leave you worry free knowing you have an extra battery ready to roll when you hit the red.

Conclusively

Experimenting with the tips above should help you to greatly extend the battery life of your BlackBerry Smartphone. While some of the factors above such as network coverage are not usage dependent, in general the more time you spend with the BlackBerry in your hands actually using it, the quicker the battery is going to die. If you spend hours a day watching videos on your BlackBerry or tether it to your PlayBook or laptop, you're going to eat the through the battery much quicker than if you mainly leave it in your pocket or purse and pull it out when you get a BBM or email.

The transactions limits you have set on an activated card depend on the mode of activation, if you have activated on the ATM the transaction limits are; bill payment: 250,000, transfer to account 1,000,000, recharge 8000. NOTE THOUGH: That your bank may set more stringent or different limits. However if you activated on the mobile application the transaction limits are: bill payment: 0, transfer to account 0, (you will not be able to perform a payment or do a transfer), recharge 200

WHATSAPP FREE FOREVER!!!

Lot of issues of being unable to renew whatsapp service after expiration have been trending in my inbox.

But I will rather write on how to make sure it NEVER EXPIRES because its widely hear that PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

HOW IT WORKS

I sincerely don’t believe that somebody reading this still doesn’t know what WHATSAPP is. But for the possibility of that, WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other! Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing.

WHATSAPP says that there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends. But you have to pay for data/internet connectivity except you have free access to them from your network provider or via a WIFI.
In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.

THE COST

Unlike BBM or 2go, for all phone types, WhatsApp is free to download and use freely for the first year. After, you have the option of extending your subscription for $0.99USD (about NGR163 Nigeria Naira presently) per year. Subscriptions are cumulative, so if you pay for an additional year of service, it will add to your current subscription or free year-long trial. There is no difference between the free and paid versions of WhatsApp other than the length of service.

Note: Deleting and reinstalling WhatsApp does not reset your subscription.

FREE FOR EVER
After noting or tried the fact that deleting and reinstalling of the APP doesn’t reset your subscription. And you are presently having 2MONTH OF SERVICE running left.
Just take these steps when it’s remaining at least 1MONTH OF SERVICE, it advisable you follow this step when its even 2months left.

On your whatsapp application,
1.      Goto SETTINGS
2.      Select ACCOUNT
3.      Select DELETE MY ACCOUNT

You will then have the application like you newly download it. You should give it minimum of 6hours before you input your number again.

When you input your number again, you will receive the message of 1year of service
Deleting your account process is almost like the process you take whenever you install/reinstall whatsapp

NB: kindly note that the price you pay for this process is that all your group would have been gone. They will have to re-invite you to the groups

And if you don’t have any problem in making payment online, then 165naira is not too much for a year service.

You can also do other things yourself, that's why I called it DO-IT-YOURSELF.
